TIP Collaborate with Intel & Analog Devices to Enable Metaverse with O-RAN mMIMO Solutions

by admin

Cellular networks need more capacity and intelligence to support metaverse and augmented reality applications for both consumers and businesses. Massive MIMO (mMIMO) can provide more capacity and, thanks to its beamforming capabilities, centralize bandwidth to devices, offering the ability to deliver a metaverse experience from a single 5G radio. However, there is currently no mMIMO whitebox solution with extensive end-to-end capabilities to meet this demand.

In response, the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) is collaborating with Intel and Analog Devices to enable the Metaverse with O-RAN Massive MIMO (mMIMO) solutions as part of the TIP OpenRAN project group. This collaboration will result in a 5G mMIMO Open RAN Radio Unit (O-RU) whitebox, distributed by Intel, capable of supporting O-RAN’s Workgroup 4 IoT profile. The whitebox is powered by Intel® Agilex™, leveraging Intel’s advanced beamforming technology and his RadioVerse® system-on-chip (SoC) software-defined transceivers in analog devices.

Using programmable and widely adopted silicon and advanced beamforming technology, the compact white-box is equipped with a ready-to-deploy mMIMO wideband implementation. The mMIMO O-RU is conceived as a wideband standalone radio unit with 32 antenna elements supporting O-RAN interfaces and advanced software applications.

MNOs, OEMs, and ODMs can use the O-RU Whitebox to leverage the O-RAN ecosystem, extensive IP library, and Agilex processing power to develop and market bespoke O-RUs. Benefit from reduced time-to-market and reduced CAPEX. The mMIMO O-RU Whitebox opens the door to a wider playing field for system integrators, giving operators more options to meet their specific requirements while helping alleviate vendor lock-in .

TIP supports the OpenRAN group’s initiative to define and build radio solutions based on generic, vendor-neutral hardware, open interfaces, and software. With O-RU whitebox, software capabilities, extensive IP portfolio, and strategic partnerships, Intel is playing a leading role in the open RAN effort.

Intel VP & GM Mike Fitton
Using Intel’s Agilex-based white-box as a reference solution, customers can customize products to meet their unique needs, accelerating TTM and significantly reducing R&D effort. For his ODMs in regions where he intends to deploy 5G equipment in countries where the government mandates “Made in Region” 5G equipment, Intel’s white-box model is a big deal for the ODM to own the design and IP. Helpful. Carriers can efficiently deploy base stations and fiber by connecting more devices from a single radio.
